Can Petite Women Wear Maxi Skirts?

Appearance-wise, I am petite in stature and am never the tallest one in my circle of friends. Hence, whenever I choose an outfit for the day, I strive to make myself appear magically taller and leaner.  After-all, a little bit of deception will do no harm, right? When I knew that the theme of a small birthday party I was invited to was a maxi skirt theme, I started to get worried. This is a new challenge! What should I wear?

You see, maxi skirts and petite women don't really compliment each other (or so I thought).

I will look even shorter when standing next to my taller friends. Don't get me wrong, I love my height! Being petite can be quite convenient as well.  One of the strong advantage of having a small figure is that it makes me look at least 10 years younger than my actual age .  Provided that I take good care of myself physically and mentally, of course.

Believe it or not, I had planned this outfit in my head days prior to the event. Something about planning what to wear really excites me in a way. However, I find that when longer planning is involved, money will slowly creep in too.  If it was my party, getting new clothes would be more forgivable. It’s not that  I don’t own any maxi skirts, it’s just that I don’t own the right one for the look  that I was going for! I’ll have to admit that sometimes my nafs just gets the best of me.

Location plays a very important role in determining one's outfit.

When I knew that the birthday party will be held at our usual place, I sighed breath of relief. The first thing that came to mind is that I get to be more casual for this event. Thank goodness!

Now that I know when and where the occasion is held, it’s time to really brainstorm on what to wear. Let the search for the perfect outfit begin.  With my 'magic wand' , I came out with a monochrome olive and white/silverish outfit.

Zara has always been one of my go to fashion brands and it still hasn’t failed me

Sadly, Zara doesn’t offer maxi skirts for petite people .  However, some of their midi skirts are long enough for me to wear. As I was scanning for a maxi skirt in Zara, something finally caught my attention. It was this olive ankle-length midi skirt and it was just what I was looking for. Luckily, it fitted me like a glove (in a loose way) and most importantly within my budget. I bought it and instantly went back home before anyone sensed any mischief hehehe. Well done, Enna!

Since I will be having a heavy lunch together with some scrumptious desserts, deciding to wear something loose was the wisest option as you never know when you fall into temptations. Without realising it, you would hear the tempting food calling out your name melodiously..  ennaaaa, ennaaaa ennnaaaaa.....

Hence, I chose a comfy sweatshirt from Divided by H&M to fill up the empty space inside my oh-not-so-flat stomach .  Normally, I would avoid buying terry-like material but since it was on sale for only RM20 and it is the perfect combination with my skirt, so I asked myself, oh what-the-heck! Why not!

 When in doubt, wear Diorama!

One can never go wrong with the Diorama small silverish bag by Christian Dior.  With the perfect colour and size, this bag goes with everything! Hence, it is the choice of bag for the day. When the bag was first introduced to the general public, many so-called critics proclaimed it was a Chanel Boy rip-off. At first glance, it appears to be so but having owned both Chanel Boy and Diorama myself, the comparison is pointless and thus, can be ignored.

To be honest, this outfit does not require additional accessories as it is already a killer combo. It’s just because I am so used to wearing at least one accessory whenever I am out and about, hence, I had decided to grab my Hermes white enamel Clic H with palladium hardware.  What I love about this piece is the subtleness of the design. It will still look gorgeous without being 'loud' on anyone's wrist.

Even with my bracelet, I somehow feel like something was missing. Then it struck me, aha... earrings!  So I searched through my drawers and grabbed a pair of silver earrings by Lovisa. Now I'm good to go…

The shoe determines the final look

The shoes are the final staple for any kind of look. Initially, I had chosen a pump shoe by Charles & Keith, but at the very last minute, i chose to go with some classic pair of sneakers.

But then, i still feel i was going to regret choosing the sneakers.  No, no, no. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with these gorgeous and comfortable sneakers. It’s just that I’m famous for my petite size and i am hoping to stand next to my bff’s will make me look as ‘tall’ as those Victoria Secret models. However, all those ingenious outfit plans I had coordinated in my mind in order to make me look taller and leaner still fail me.  I knew I should be wearing heels. No doubt about it. But on that day, I refused to acknowledge the rational thoughts in my brain.  Therefore, sneakers it was!

On the day.. I cannot believe my eyes when I saw 2 of my friends wore pants! Haishhhhh!  So much for all my hard efforts . I spent well over RM200 for this outfit and the funny thing was, I still look shorter when standing next to them. I had to tiptoe like a ballerina, you know...

Ah well... All was not lost though. Like the rest, I still looked nice and presentable.  Alhamdulillah.
